Should You Still Be Cold-Calling, or Has That Money Stopped Working as Hard?
GSL Media Insights — Issue #10
Somewhere in your budget, there's a line item for outbound effort — cold calls, a list-based dialing service, maybe a part-time person whose job is mostly reaching out to people who didn't ask to be reached.
The question worth asking isn't "does cold calling still work" — phrased that way, it's a debate people have strong opinions about and weak evidence for. The better question is narrower: is that specific dollar still earning what it used to, relative to what else it could be doing right now?
This Is a Capital-Allocation Question, Not a Morality Question
Cold calling isn't dead, and treating this as "outbound bad, inbound good" misses the point. Plenty of businesses still close real deals from outbound effort. The actual question is about where the marginal dollar does the most good today, and that comparison has shifted — not because cold calling got worse, but because the inbound side of the equation got a lot stronger and a lot cheaper.
We've covered two pieces of this shift already, in separate issues, and it's worth connecting them here. Issue #6 covered that 86% of Google Business Profile impressions come from people actively searching by category — "plumber near me," not a cold call interrupting their day. Issue #5 covered that a large and growing share of consumers now decide whether to even consider a business based on its reviews and profile before ever speaking to anyone. Put together: more of your next customer's decision-making is happening on a screen, unprompted by you, before a phone ever rings in either direction.
That doesn't mean outbound has no place. It means the free and low-cost inbound infrastructure — the Business Profile, the reviews, the reason someone finds you without you finding them first — has gotten disproportionately more valuable over the same period outbound effort has stayed roughly the same amount of work for roughly the same result.
What I'd Actually Do
I wouldn't tell anyone to cut outbound entirely. I'd ask a more specific set of questions before deciding where the next dollar or hour goes.
Is the Inbound Side Actually Handled?
Before questioning cold calling's value, I'd make sure the free alternative isn't sitting neglected. If your Google Business Profile isn't complete, your categories aren't right, or your reviews haven't been touched in months, the comparison isn't fair yet — you're comparing active outbound effort against inbound infrastructure you haven't actually built. Fix that first (Issues #1 and #6 cover exactly how), then make the comparison again.

What's the Actual Close Rate, Not Just the Call Volume?
A lot of businesses track how many calls got made, not how many calls turned into anything. If nobody's tracking that, it's the same blind spot covered in Issue #7 — you can't tell if outbound is working any more than you can tell which ad channel is working, if nothing's being measured.
Where Does the Marginal Hour Actually Go Further Right Now?
If an hour spent cold-calling produces roughly the same result as an hour spent improving your Business Profile, responding to reviews, or building out your Insights content, the question isn't which one is "better" in the abstract — it's which one is currently under-invested relative to its return. For a lot of businesses right now, that's the inbound side, simply because it's been neglected longer.
Don't Let Sunk Effort Decide This
If you've built a cold-calling process, a list, a script, a person dedicated to it, there's a real pull to keep funding it because of what's already been invested. That's a reason it's comfortable, not a reason it's still the best use of the next dollar.
Bottom Line
Cold calling isn't obsolete, but the ground underneath it has shifted — more of your next customer's decision now happens before your phone ever rings. Before funding outbound effort another month, make sure the free inbound side isn't the actual place your next dollar would do more.
If this was useful, forward it to a business owner still funding outbound effort without having checked whether their inbound side is actually built out yet.
